Ready for a new writing challenge? In today’s episode, we have a good time recapping the previous writing challenge of submitting some writing to a publication. (Hey, did you submit  anything? Tell us about it in the comments below!) We also invite you to write along as we embark on our next twisted game of genre assigning. Kevin assigns Catherine a genre pick involving vampires and country westerns. Catherine fights back by assigning Kevin the challenge of chick lit meets cyber punk.

What will happen? Write along and find out! Do you want us to give you a crazy genre challenge (where we pick a genre, and you write either a story, blurb or whatever in that genre style)? Leave us a comment below and we’ll cooking something up special for you.

Invite your friends to write along! Please help us grow the podcast, and these writing exercises, by sharing this episode of Write Along Radio.

Till next week – keep on writing!

  1. Got my outline done for my big world children’s fantasy book for the writing challenge. Outlined 10 chapters. Wondering whether to go for a 500 average word count putting it at about 5000 words at completion. Any insight on how many words to shoot for? I’ve read different opinions about the length of chapter books for kids.

    We’ve got a month, right?

WOW, Chris! You are setting the example for the rest of us 🙂 I’d say the novella size makes a great deal of sense. If you can do a first draft of 5000 words this month, than you are doing awesome. Kids books aren’t my forte, so I’m not sure for the wording, but why not drop into your local library and take out a 9-12 early reading chapter books. There are many examples.

And yeah, you have a month. But it is flying by, and I haven’t even gotten started!! Keep up your fantastic example to the rest of us. Do share your progress as you go 🙂 ~Catherine

      • I started chapter 5 last night. It looks like my 5000 word goal will be extended to 7500 for the first draft.

Where are you two in the process?

I started the last writing challenge, but ended up getting distracted and didn’t finish it. Although, I need to go back to it, as it is a sequel of sorts to the first children’s books I wrote and self-published.
