Catherine and Kevin’s families both read, A Visit from St. Nicholas, more commonly known as  The Night Before Christmasevery Christmas eve.

Kevin and Catherine are also big fans of the Rankin Bass Christmas Specials and, of course, A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Kevin also watches the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode “Amends” from season 3, and The X-Files episode, “The Ghosts Who Stole Christmas” from season six.

We all have unique writing styles, but the what it takes to succeed is not so very different. With Catherine back in Ottawa, Canada, she and Kevin reunite over coffee/tea to dive into giveaway book Getting There: A Book of Mentors, by Gillian Zoe Segal, and gab about the commonalities of being an entrepreneur and how that applies to our world of writing. Also we speculate on the future of self-publishing and how to write a novel.

What did we think of Getting There: A Book of Mentors? Basically, we resonated. The stories in the book are from incredibly successful business people, artists, entrepreneurs, scientists, academics and more. But guys, despite their different fields, they share so many common points of success! So how can we take these insights and apply them to our writing? Listen in for that conversation . . .

Segal’s book explores the struggles influential individuals in a number of different fields went through before finding success. The book is filled with lessons that apply to careers as authors, including trying to balance family with work, being able to pivot, dealing with failure, the need to focus, and more.
